Platter’s is probably the best guide to South African wines you are going to find. All producers are alphabetically listed and the layout bears a striking resemblence to that of a Michelin guide, although that is probably no accident. The detail is impressive with producer entries listing exhaustively the year the estate was founded, opening hours, whether farm-grown olive-oil is for sale, how many hectares are planted, and with what varieties, alongside more mundane information such as a telephone number and address. All are accompanied by succinct tasting notes of the estate’s recent releases. This comprehensive guide also includes a good range of clear maps, stay-over suggestions, restaurant recommendations and a handful of 1970s-style over-posed photographs. This is a must-have for anyone with an interest or love for South African wines. Any visitor to its wine regions will find the guide indespensable.
