Zachys has broken the US$4m mark for the first time since its auctions began in October.
In its fourth independent auction at Restaurant Daniel in Manhattan from 8 to 10 May, Zachys grossed US$4,042,647 (with commissions), selling 93% of over 2,000 lots.
Jeff Zacharia, president of Zachys, an emporium in Scarsdale, a Manhattan suburb, said, ‘We had so many consignors wishing to work with us that we had to add on a third day.’
The highlight was an extraordinary 50-bottle lot of wines rated 100 points by Robert Parker. The consigment covered 1982 to 2000 vintages, and fetched $32,480.
It contained such Bordeaux chateaux as Lafite, Latour, Léoville-Las-Cases, Pichon-Lalande (1982s); Clinet, Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut- Brion (1989s); Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarrosse (St-Émilion), Montrose, Margaux (1990s); a Monbazillac, Bruno Bilancini’s 1995 Tirecul-la-Gravière Cuvée Madame (50 centilitre); and 1995 Verget Valmur Chablis.
Also, Jaboulet’s 1990 Hermitage La Chapelle and Chapoutier’s 1999 Ermitage Blanc L’Ermite, Northern Rhône; Brunel’s 1998 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Cailloux Cuvée Centenaire, Southern Rhône; 1985 Sassicaia Tenuta San Guido, Italy; 1997 Quinta do Noval Nacional, port; 1997 Screaming Eagle cabernet sauvignon and 1992 Dalla Valle Maya, Napa Valley; 1976 Penfolds Grange and 1996 Three Rivers shiraz, Australia.
The top-grossing lot overall was seven bottles of 1961 Latour-à-Pomerol, which were estimated at US$30,000 to US$45,000 and sold for US$34,800.
