There is still time to enter this year’s Young Wine Writer Awards for a chance to win a cheque for £1,000 to develop a book or article based on a wine region of choice plus a 14-day all-expense paid trip to the wine regions of Australia.
The awards are open to anyone aged 30 or under (by the end of 2012) who is based in the UK and has not previously had a wine book published or worked as a regular contributor to a wine magazine.
Fiona Holman, of Pavilion Books, who sponsor the award said: ‘This award aims to encourage new writing talent within the world of wine and to provide a real opportunity for some inspiring travel around vineyards and wineries across the globe.
‘We are looking for wine writing potential and commitment to popular consumer wine-writing rather than extensive knowledge or experience.’
There are two main prizes for the winner, firstly a cheque for £1,000 to enable a trip to a wine region of the winner’s choice to gain first-hand experience and to develop a book or article based on that experience. The second is a 14-day all-expense paid trip to the wine regions of Australia, courtesy of Wine Australia. The trip will include a tour of the key winegrowing areas, opportunities to meet the winemakers themselves and one-on-one tastings with leading producers. There will also be the chance to write articles about the trip for the Wine Australia website.
To enter the awards, applicants need to submit 1500 words in the form of either: an introduction to a book on any wine-related topic or the first of a series of themed articles on any wine-related topic.
Applicants also need to submit a CV, including date of birth, current position and place of work and contact details including an email address. Further examples of wine writing can also be sent to supplement an entry.
The deadline for applications is 30 September, 2012.
