Bottles of Ch. Leoville Barton 2003, Ch. Duhart Milon 2003 and Bahans Haut Brion 2003, the second wine of Chateau Haut Brion, will be sold this week in a series of auctions starting on Sunday and finishing on Saturday evening.
Fifty bidders from 7 different countries took part in the week long auction for the Latour 2001, which concluded last Wednesday evening. There was fierce competition right up until the end as participants battled to post the lowest unique bid. Andrew Cullimore from Unique Wine Auctions said, ‘ I am extremely happy with the interest in this lot, and slightly surprised too, as this was the first auction of this type we have held. We will be looking to hold more auctions like this in the future, though for the week starting 30th May we will run a larger quantity of auctions of well known but less expensive wines.´
Unique Wine Auctions is a revolutionary concept in the sale of fine wine.
Instead of a normal auction format where a wine is sold to the highest bidder, Unique Wine Auctions is a blind auction and charges bidders per bid that they make, with the lowest unique bid, that is, the lowest value for which there is only one bid, winning the item at the end of the auction.
Andrew admits that it hasn’t all been plain sailing though, ´in the beginning trying to pick the wines to offer that would create the most interest was surprisingly difficult and I think we suffered for a while by having too many lots available at one time. By offering one or two lots at a time from now onwards and for only a limited period we should create many more winners on a regular basis, which is what everyone wants. We also have a better grasp of which wines create the most interest, not surprisingly Cru Classé Claret has been top of the list´.
With top Bordeaux wines hitting higher and higher prices, and the 2010 en primeur campaign looking likely to continue that trend, partaking in these kind of auctions does seem like a shrewd move even though you are not guaranteed to walk away with the bottle being auctioned.
