The wines from Saint-Emilion, writes Stephen Brook, are marked by inconsistency, just as they were during the en primeur tastings. However, some wines that showed indifferently in the spring following the harvest performed better now they are in bottle. There were few surprises: the best and best-run properties made the most successful wines, though a few properties failed to rise to their usual standards. The weak wines are raw and herbaceous; there are other wines that are good and balanced but too lacking in substance. These same remarks apply equally to Pomerol, but the sample was smaller and many top estates do not participate in the UGC tastings.
