THE WINES OF MONTALCINO AND THE CONSORTIUM

a decanter.com promotion Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino Montalcino, located in Tuscany around 100km from Florence and around 40km south of Siena, is an area with an unspoiled landscape that is perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a unique environment.

Four ‘denomination of origin’ wines can be produced in Montalcino: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, Rosso di Montalcino DOC, Moscadello di Montalcino DOC and Sant’Antimo DOC.

‘Brunello di Montalcino’ can only be produced with the Sangiovese vine. The sale of the wine cannot occur before the fifth year after the harvest (of which two years in barrel) and the minimum period for refinement in bottle is four months for the ‘annata’ (regular) type and six months for the Riserva type.

Along with Brunello, ‘Rosso di Montalcino’ DOC is produced via a selection process on the part of the producer. This wine is also produced with Sangiovese only, but can be sold in the first September after the harvest.

‘Moscadello di Montalcino’ is a white dessert wine produced with Muscatel grapes, both as a sparkling and late harvest types.

‘Sant’Antimo’ is the latest Montalcino DOC and applies to all the wines produced in the territory that are not Brunello or Rosso.

There are currently 250 producers listed in the registry of Brunello di Montalcino vineyards (and therefore Rosso di Montalcino vineyards too) with a total area of 2,000ha. of which 200 bottle their own wine.

The Brunello di Montalcino Consortium was founded in 1967 just after the recognition of the DOC, as a free association of producers. The Consortium includes all the producers of Montalcino, therefore the representation is 100%.
