History:
The most northerly of Medoc’s classed growths, Calon-Ségur formed the heart of the old Calon estate which covered most of the commune of Saint-Estèphe. By the late 1600s, it was acquired – and its name modified – by Marquis Nicolas de Ségur who already owned Lafite and Latour (not for nothing was he nicknamed ‘the prince of vines’!). It is from this noble owner that the heart motif on Calon-Segur’s label derives, after his declaration ‘I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon’. The estate, which was divided up a little during the early 19th century (Château Montrose was created form a forested section sold in 1825, for example), has been in the capable hands of the Gasqueton family since 1894. The word Calon, incidently, refers to little river skiff used in the Middle Ages to ferry timber across the Gironde esturay.
