History:
Léoville-Las-Cases originates from the ancient estate of Mont-Moytié, a vast raised gravel mound among now-drained marshland at the northern tip of the appellation. It’s choice terroir, and a distinctive feature of Las-Cases is the
‘Grand Clos’, a 50-hectare walled vineyard which runs alongside First Growth Château Latour. At the end of the 17th century, the estate passed by marriage from the Moytiés to the de Gascqs (they changed the title to Léoville) and later by inheritance to the Marquis de Las Cases Beauvoir and his siblings. During the French Revolution a quarter was sold – it ultimately became Léoville Barton – and in the mid 1800s a smaller portion passed by marriage to the Poyferrés (the origins of Chateau Léoville-Poyferré). By the 20th century, Las-Cases was owned by 13 shareholders, among them wine trader Théophile Skawinski. He later passed his stake to son-in-law André Delon whose family have become majority shareholders over time. Today, Jean-Hubert Delon is in charge.
