The Médoc appellation begins well north of Saint-Estèphe and the climate is cooler than other regions in Bordeaux. Attention in the vineyards and modern winemaking have very much improved quality overall and the health of the late-harvested grapes showed in the wines. In the Haut-Médoc, vineyards run from south of Margaux to north of Saint-Estephe, so the appellation is by no means homogeneous. Some of the best wines this year come from a group of châteaux at Macau and Ludon in the south. Their vineyards touch those of La Lagune, and the wines show more plummy fruit than those more seriously Cabernet wines from further north. Overall of good quality from an appellation offering a wide stylistic range. Steven Spurrier
