A lorry carrying 18,000 bottles of wine from a Grand Cru Classe estate in Saint Emilion has overturned near Bordeaux, spilling its load across the road.
The new winemaking cellar at Chateau La Dominique
The lorry, which was carrying Chateau La Dominique‘s second wine from the 2011 vintage, overturned at a roundabout in Saint Emilion yesterday (16 July).
All bottles had to be recovered by hand, with the majority of them smashed. The wine was carried by transporters Julien et Fils in Libourne.
A spokesperson for the chateau told Decanter.com that the accident was in the hands of the insurance company and the wine was still being valued.
‘It represents only a small part of our production, but we are treating it seriously of course to ensure that our clients are in no way inconvenienced.’
The lorry driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was unharmed.
