Decanter’s recommendation of the week
The Heggies Chardonnay, Eden Valley, Australia 2005
From one of Australia’s premium, cool-climate regions, the quality of this subtle and refined Chardonnay is evident from the first whiff. Soft honeycomb aromas intermingle with touches of tropical fruit and the refreshing, clean palate is superbly balanced with oak, fruit and minerality all coming together just so. Completing the whole package is a fine, long finish. Now-3

Domaine Maby, La Forcadière Rosé, Tavel 2006 – France
From the Rhône valley’s famed rosé region, this pink delight is all you could want from such a wine. Made in a traditional, more rustic style, this is deeper in colour than is often found today yet is still crammed with fresh, red fruit and white flower notes. A lovely, eminently quaffable wine.

Quinta do Noval, Cedro do Noval, Douro, 2004 Portugal
More renowned for producing some of the finest ports available, Quinta do Noval’s foray into table wine can already be declared a success. A blend of four classic Port varietals, the aromas are unmistakably Douro with the Touriga Nacional supplying its tell-tale floral quality. This is a good example of contemporary Douro table wines at an accessible price.

Chateau Grinou, Grande Reserve Blanc, Bergerac, 2005
A 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, the presence of the latter is betrayed by this wine’s luscious, dried-pineapple-tinged and waxy nose. Barrel fermentation lends a broadness and depth to the palate that is showing surprising development yet still offering clean, fresh fruit. Now – 3

Pieropan, La Rocca, Soave, 2005
The Pieropan family have been producing wine since 1860 and their La Rocca vineyard takes its name from the medieval fortress that overlooks the town. From this plot comes the relatively late-harvested Garganega fruit that forms this breathtaking wine. With a miasma of tropical fruit on the nose (pomegranates, pineapples) and amazing richness and breadth on the palate, the result is a wonderful drinking experience from start to finish. Now – 5
