A cheap supermarket Champagne has outperformed a host of top-brand, non-vintage Champagnes at a UK wine tasting.
Tesco’s Premier Cru Champagne, which is produced by co-operative winemakers Union Champagne, beat the likes of Perrier-Jouët, Taittinger, Mumm and Laurent-Perrier Grand-Siècle at the London tasting held earlier this year.
Although its rivals cost between £18 and £50, the Tesco Champagne sells for just under £15.
This is not the first time the Tesco’s Champagne, which triumphed in the non-vintage Champagne category at the recent International Wine Challenge, has been lauded.
The Champagne also won a Silver medal in Decanter’s 2005 World Wine Awards (click here to view the results) and it also topped a tasting by consumer magazine Which? in December 2002.
