Decanter raises over £25k for charity

Decanter presented a £25,500 cheque to the charity WaterAid this week after raising the sum through the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Decanter’s publisher, Sarah Kemp, and associate publisher Clare Seel presented the Cheque to WaterAid’s Clare Davies and Duncan Wilbur on Wednesday.

The money was raised through several auctions of wine bottles left over from the 2004 Decanter World Wine Awards. Sales, in association with Christie’s, were held at both Christie’s auction rooms in London, in which 59 lots made nearly £15,000, and at last November’s Decanter Fine Wine Encounter.

WaterAid estimates that the ‘wine into water’ project, as it was dubbed, will help thousands in Africa and Asia.

‘It costs just £15 to give someone in the developing world access to clean water, effective sanitation and hygiene education, meaning that the Decanter auction has changed the lives of 1,700 people in Africa and Asia,’ said Wilbur.

The ‘wine into water’ auctions will take place again this year with both parties hoping to increase the amount of money raised.

‘The strong message of turning wine into water and the proactive support that the people at Decanter have put into the partnership has seen an absolutely phenomenal amount of money raised,’ said Wilbur.

Details of future WaterAid auctions will be published on decanter.com.
