Decanter and WaterAid

Turning Wine into Water

Decanter and WaterAid celebrate 5 years of their “Wine into Water” partnership!

It’s now 5 years since Decanter and WaterAid began their partnership turning wine into water through wine auctions to transform the lives of some of the world’s poorest people through access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene education.

During this time, Decanter has raised over £203,000 for WaterAid. That’s enough to support over 13,000 people based on the fact that just £15 can enable one person to gain access to safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene education.

Decanter’s support for WaterAid projects in Madagascar and Burkina Faso has helped children like Valy Adeline from Madagascar, pictured here using her school’s new sanitation facilities. Without toilets and clean water, cholera and diarrhoea can thrive. In fact, diarrhoea kills more children than malaria, measles and HIV/AIDS combined. Helping schools build proper latrines and teaching good hygiene practices not only saves lives but also ensures children don’t miss out on an education.

WaterAid works in 26 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific Region transforming lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation. WaterAid works with local partners who understand local issues and provide them with the skills and support to help communities set up and manager practical and sustainable projects that meet their real needs.

Having already helped over 13 million people since 1981 when WaterAid was established, the goal is to reach 100 million people by 2015.

How Decanter raises money for WaterAid

Wine producers from around the world enter their wine to be judged in the annual Decanter World Wine Awards. For each wine entered into the competition, a producer is asked to send four bottles, in case of corked or oxidized wine and breakages. All bottles remaining after the judging has been completed are sold to raise money for WaterAid. Many are sold through Christie’s as part of their prestigious Fine Wine Auctions with all proceeds going to WaterAid. Others bottles are sold in Decanter’s own charity sales.

Sarah Kemp, Decanter publishing director said: “Decanter Magazine is proud to have been supporting WaterAid for the past five years and to have raised over £200,000 for its water and sanitation projects through the Wine into Water initiative. Supporting WaterAid has become a personal cause for the Decanter team and we look forward to continuing our relationship long into the future”.
