Outgoing CIVB president Eric Dulong has condemned as 'impossible' the system limiting the presidency to two years.
Dulong said it was ‘ridiculous’ that no one individual can stay on for a second consecutive term. ‘It’s impossible to change the mentality of producers or introduce a new system within that time period,’ he said last week in London before handing over the presidency in July,
At the same time, Dulong unveiled a new logo (pictured) for Bordeaux, which the CIVB hopes will help to promote the region as a brand, and to revitalise its stuffy and traditional image.
‘Bordeaux’s 57 appellations are confusing for consumers,’ he said. ‘They need to know that these are part of the wider Bordeaux region.’ Under new guidelines, every château will be encouraged to print the logo on its label – this includes the classed growths. ‘They won’t all do it,’ acknowledges Dulong, ‘but even if only one château uses the new logo, it will be a success.’
The CIVB (Conseil Interprofesional du Vin de Bordeaux) is responsible for maintaining quality standards in the region’s wines, and for their promotion.
Dulong was offered the next vice-presidency but has declined in order to devote more time to his family and other business interests. Jean-Louis Trocard, owner of a Bordeaux superieur château in the Libourne region, and president before Dulong, will take over when he steps down.
