Robin Williams sells Napa Valley estate

Hollywood star Robin Williams has put his Napa Valley villa and wine estate up for sale, asking US$35m for the property.

Villa Sorriso: ‘unique complexity’

Robin Williams
, the Oscar-winning star of Good Will Hunting, bought Villa Sorriso, high in the Mayacamas Mountains between Napa and Sonoma, in 1994, shortly after scoring a worldwide hit with his comedy Mrs Doubtfire.

The 20,000sq ft Portuguese limestone villa includes five bedrooms, an oak-panelled library, home cinema, family room and climate-controlled cellars for wine and fine art, as well as its own tower and bridge.

Outside there is a 65ft infinity pool surrounded by antique European stone decking, lawn and multi-level sculpture garden.

There are 9.5ha of vines, all planted in the early 1990s and part of the Mount Veeder appellation – 85% of them Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest a mix of Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

The grapes are mostly sold to Robert Craig for his Mt Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, which has been given scores of 95 and 96 points by Robert Parker.

Craig’s website describes the vines as ‘mature enough to showcase all of Mt Veeder’s unique complexity’ with many different microclimates and varying exposures.

It adds: ‘The resulting Cabernets are highly prized for deep, black mountain fruit, cassis, dark chocolate and hints of violets, mints and spice.’

Sotheby’s International Realty, based in Sonoma, is handling the sale.
