Michael Hill Smith AM MW became the first Australian to pass the Master of Wine examination in 1988 and was awarded the inaugural Madame Bollinger Tasting Medal the same year. Apart from being an international wine judge, wine consulatnt, occasional wine writer, Michael is also the co-founder of Shaw + Smith (Adelaide Hills), Tolpuddle Vineyard (Tasmania) and MMAD Vineyard (McLaren Vale).
In 2008, he was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) for his contribution to the Australian Wine Industry, has featured in Decanter‘s Power List in 2009, 2011 and 2013, and was nominated for the WSET Outstanding Alumni Award 2017.
In addition he is a wine consultant to Singapore Airlines, a Trustee of the Len Evans Tutorial and most recently, Chairman and Founder of the Tranche Wine and Food Scholarship, which supports emerging talent in the Australian wine and hospitality industry.
Based in Australia, Michael has been associated with the Decanter World Wine Awards since the inception of the awards in 2004.
