It’s hard to keep up with the increased pace of change at Lidl: this year, the supermarket has moved from wine range refreshes every two months to every month.

Each refresh has a different theme, ensuring new and interesting wines are always available in store. But it also means that you need to act quickly as they don’t hang around for long!

Top picks from the current range include a sparkling wine from Spain, which attained its sparkle via carbonation. While looked down upon by some, Richard Bampfield MW – who works closely with Lidl to fine-tune the range – explained that this method not only keeps costs down, but also helps to retain aromatics, resulting in an extremely affordable and deliciously peachy fizz.

It’s also nice to see a couple of wines from Ukraine, which appear to be here solely on merit. Both are really interesting, especially if you’re new to eastern European wines, and they fit into the range nicely, offering great value and something a little bit different.

There’s also a recommended Moldovan red, which has a really floral profile and ripe dark fruits perfect for drinking with something like a lamb tagine
