Aldi wines: Best seasonal buys

From great-value sparkling wines, exciting under-the-radar grape varieties, and crisp whites and rosés perfect for picnics, garden parties and alfresco dining, Tina Gellie selects the best buys from Aldi's spring/summer range.

Supermarket Aldi showcased 94 sparkling and still wines in its 2025 UK spring/summer collection, 51 of them new.

With prices starting from £4.19 for the non-vintage Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot under the Estevez label from Chile, to £19.99 for the 2017 claret from Château La Garde in Pessac-Léognan, the focus of this German supermarket chain is on affordable quality.

As with all UK supermarket buyers, Josh Heley (still wines) and Lucy Pemberton (sparkling, fortified and no-/low-alcohol wines), have the difficult task of delivering a versatile offer amid rising inflation, interest rates and general cost of living.

On shelves since spring 2024 is the Unearthed range, following in the footsteps of similar ‘off-the-beaten-track’ lines at other UK supermarkets such as Marks & Spencer’s Found and Expressions ranges, Waitrose’s Loved & Found and Sainsbury’s Taste The Difference Discovery Collection. The 2024 Gemischter Satz white field blend from Austria and 2023 Kratošija red from North Macedonia are the picks.

Aldi’s Spanish offer, under the Baron Amarillo label, is always reliable, and especially good this season with a tasty 2024 Godello from Bierzo and 2017 Specially Selected Gran Reserva Rioja.

Likewise, the rosé selection is a highlight, with solid buys starting from £6.99, including two Grenache-led 2023 Côtes de Provence pinks from Pezat and Aldi’s French label Chassaux et Fils.

Overly high sugar levels are common in many supermarket wine ranges, particularly wines under £10, and this remains an issue at Aldi. While most noticeable in the reds, even the supermarket’s 11 Proseccos are all Extra Dry which (confusingly) is sweeter than Brut, with a sugar content between 12 and 17 grams per litre.

Apparently this year the supermarket’s buyers are ‘not only focusing on value, we’re also focusing on choice’. This is welcome in the expanded Unearthed and Specially Selected ranges, but not in the fact that of the 33 whites showcased at the recent tasting 12 were Sauvignon Blancs (16 are listed on the website).

In addition to the 22 new recommendations from Aldi’s 2025 spring/summer tasting below, three previous Decanter wine picks are still available and remain great buys:

Aldi’s range is only available to purchase at one of its 990 UK stores, 200 of which offer a click-and-collect service.

Of the following 25 wines, 22 are recommendations from the 2025 spring/summer tasting in March and the others are from older tastings but still available in store.
