Tasting: Volnay 1er Cru 2010

Dark red; ripe fruit and minerality – and new oak too on the nose; chunky style for Volnay. A fair amount of fruit, marked, chewy tannin and lively acidity make for a muscular expression of the commune, at very much a lesser 1er Cru level in terms of complexity and finesse, even if there is good fruit length. Forbidding for the moment, likely always to be a chewy prospect for Volnay. Very much the Pommard side of the commune style. Solid

Deep young colour with purple rim. Well-concentrated black cherry and blackcurrant on the nose, good broad and ripe fruit on the palate. Still some tannins on the finish, yet the up-front fruit is not for the long term.

Overripe and blurred hedgerow fruit on nose, a hint of oxidation? Comes together a little on the palate: firm Pommard-style tannins, some depth and intensity. Fruit a little muted, decent, medium finish.
