Chinese New Year: 15 award-winning Chinese wines to try

Tasted and rated by the expert judges at the Decanter World Wine Awards, discover a selection of top-scoring red wines from China to celebrate the Year of the Dragon.

Results for Chinese wines at the Decanter World Wine Awards continue to establish its reputation as a quality-led wine producing country.

At the 2023 competition, China received a record-breaking 272 medals its biggest-ever medal haul to date, and up 40 medals from the previous year of the awards.

With nine Gold medals followed by a further 83 Silver medals and 180 Bronze, China’s wine-producing reputation is proving to go from strength to strength.

On awarding top medals at the competition, regional chair for Asia Poh Tiong Ch’ng commented: ‘When the line between fruit, structure and freshness is seamless, that’s, for me, a Gold wine.’

Red wines saw particular success with international grape varieties and China’s ‘signature grape’, Marselan proving the country’s diversity of soils, landscapes and climates. Cabernet Gernischt, the France-originated crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache continues to showcase its potential to thrive in varied growing conditions, with wines from Shandong awarded top marks.
