Exclusive: Jean-Charles Boisset interview, plus 11 wines tasted

Known by some as the 'Walt Disney of wine', Jean-Charles Boisset is a global force to be reckoned with, says Jonathan Cristaldi, who speaks to the enigmatic winery group president in California about his many projects and ideas, followed by a tasting of 11 wines from the trans-Atlantic Boisset Collection.

Could Jean-Claude and Claudine Boisset, founders of Burgundy’s famed Domaine de la Vougeraie, an estate inspired by their village – Vougeot —and nearby Château du Clos de Vougeot, ever have imagined that their son, Jean-Charles Boisset, would grow up to become a prominent player in the American wine scene?

Surely not. However, there’s no denying that the 51-year-old president of Boisset Collection is a global force to be reckoned with.

He adeptly balances an existentialist dreamer persona obsessed with destiny, fate and reincarnation with the savvy cool of a calculating business person building and maintaining a global wine dynasty.

In a little over two decades, Jean-Charles has spearheaded a dramatic expansion of the family’s holdings throughout France and America.

Today, the Boisset empire, headed by him and his older sister, Nathalie, spans 37 brands almost evenly divided between France and the US, with projects in the UK and India, producing roughly one million cases annually with about 1,000 employees globally.
