Noma named best restaurant in the world

Noma has been named best restaurant in the world.

The Copenhagen-based restaurant was awarded the accolade at last night’s San Pellegrino World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards.

Noma, run by 32 year old Rene Redzepi, pushed Ferran Adria’s Ell Bulli, which has held the title for the last 4 years, into second place.

Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck was placed third.

Redzepi, who unexpectedly shot to number 3 in the rankings last year’s rankings, paid tribute to his team.

‘When we started seven years ago none of us could have imagined this but it shows that if you have the right team everything is possible,’ he said.

The 2010 awards also saw several high profile restaurants plummet in the ratings.

The French Laundry dropped 20 points to number 32, although chef Thomas Keller’s Per Se remains in the top 10. Tetsuya’s was down 21 points to number 38 and St John dropped 29 points to 43.

There was a boost for Daniel Boulud whose eponymous New York restaurant Daniel shot up 33 points to number 8.

Parisian bistro Le Chateaubriand, the highest-ranking French restaurant at number 11, rose by 29 points.

Newcomers to the top 50 included Claude Bosi of Hibiscus in London, one of only 3 British-based chefs, and Schloss Schauenstein in Switzerland, the highest new entry at 30.
