Retail magnate Phil Wrigley has been named as the next chairman of Majestic Wine, replacing current chairman Simon Burke.
Wrigley, until last year the chief executive and then chairman of fast fashion retailer New Look, has been described as a retail heavyweight to rival the likes of Sir Stuart Rose and Sir Philip Green.
His retail career has until now been strongly fashion-focused, including stints at BHS, Dorothy Perkins and Debenhams.
Wrigley, 57, joins the Majestic board in April and will succeed Burke, 50, at the company’s next AGM this August.
Majestic chief executive Steve Lewis said of Wrigley: ‘His broad retail and property experience will be invaluable in continuing to grow the Majestic story.’
Burke has been on the Majestic board since 2000, and has served as chairman since 2005.
He is currently embroiled in the corporate battle under way at pub operator Mitchells & Butlers, and is one of billionaire investor Joe Lewis’ preferred candidates to join the company’s board.
