History:
The loss of 2006 purchaser, wealthy businessman Hubert Perrodo, killed in a skiing accident, dashed hopes of a new future for the Alesme-Becker vineyard. The estate remains in the Perrodo family, but has yet to regain the status it enjoyed in its heyday, around the time of its respectable Third Growth 1855 ranking and construction of its elegant château four years later. Like other Medoc châteaux, decline began in the late 19th century, triggered by powdery mildew and phylloxera. The estate was failing when, in the early 20th century, it was acquired by Count Chaix-d’Est-Ange, who already owned Lascombes. He had intended combining the two, but died before realising the merger. A succession of owners followed, most notably the Zuger family (who still own the original Alesme-Becker château) and who sold the property to Perrodo.
