History:
Château Mouton-Rothschild is unique in that its 1855 ranking was later amended:
Baron Philippe de Rothschild succeeded, in 1973, in having the estate upgraded to First Growth – and then only after a 20 year struggle. It’s certainly top-class terroir, high gravel ground once part of the same vast Ségur estate that gave rise to Lafite and Latour, and which during the 18th century (as Brane-Mouton, under the Brane family) produced much-admired wines. Yet, what Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild (of an English branch of the originally German family) acquired in 1853, a century later, was a vineyard too neglected to warrant anything in the 1855 ranking but head of the Second Growths. Two generations passed before the Rothchilds would accomplish real rejuventation, when Baron Philippe inherited in 1922 and set about creating the enterprising estate. Since his death in 1988 daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild has been in charge. She continues the tradition her father started of inviting celebrated artists to design each vintage label.
