Castello di Ama rejoins Consorzio

Premier Chianti Classico estate Castello di Ama will rejoin the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico – and will have the right to put the Black Rooster symbol on its bottles.

Ama left the Consorzio 12 years ago. A handful of other top producers including Marchesi di Antinorio, who remains out of the association, have also left.

Earlier this year, the two former Consorzi for Chianti Classico merged to form a single Consorzio for the famous DOCG.

This single and more effective consorzio comes after the 2004 enactment of the decree known as Erges Omnes.

The most important function of this decree is that it gives the Consorzios the authority and the obligation to thoroughly check all aspects of production. This includes making sure what is planted in the vineyards tallies with planting registers.

To help enforce the new decree, Erga Omnes also stipulates that all producers in the appellation with this directive must pay dues to the Consorzio, whether

they are members or not.not.

Ama’s enologist and director Marco Pallanti welcomed the new law. ‘The Consorzio itself can now closely monitor all production activities, especially as to what is growing in the vineyards. Quality, Chianti Classico and our historical wine-growing area are finally getting the focus they deserve. The traditional black rooster symbol is really going to be a guarantee of this quality,‘ he told decanter.com.

Until the merger, only producers who were members of the Marchio Storico Gallo Nero had the right to put this symbol on their bottles.

Vittorio Pozzesi, president of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico said, ‘I am elated to have Castello di Ama, an exemplary estate, in the Conorzio.’.
