On the night of Friday the 21st February, the results of the eighth edition of the prestigious Argentina Wine Awards (AWA) were announced.
Over 250 people attended the award-giving ceremony, a cocktail reception held in the Mendoza winery Bodega Escorihuela Gascón. Present were Argentina’s leading winery owners, winemakers, wine industry executives, members of the judging panel and journalists.
More than 650 wine samples from 150 wineries had been tasted by an expert panel of 12 international and six Argentine judges. Prizes were awarded for 20 categories, each divided into five price ranges.
A total of four Regional Trophies, 12 Trophies, 58 gold medals, 256 silver medals and 276 bronze medals were awarded at the competition.
The addition, for the first time, of a special Trophy for each of Argentina’s main wine-producing regions – the North, San Juan, Mendoza and Patagonia – was aimed at bestowing an even stronger federal quality on the event and bringing in wineries from all over the country.
The AWA contest organized by Wines of Argentina which is set in the context of the 2020 Strategic Wine Plan, under the coordination of the Argentine Wine Corporation (COVIAR).
“The AWA 2014 winners, a token of the best of Argentine wine, will be representing us in the various actions that will be carried out by Wines of Argentina throughout the year around the world. This eighth edition has been particularly important due to the presence of highly regarded judges, the quality of the participating wines and the feedback given during the seminar,” said Alberto Arizu, President of Wines of Argentina.
