This Chilean-born Californian entrepreneur has made his mark on the wines of both wine regions after being involved at every level, from bulk wine to cult Cabernets. Gerald Asher meets him
Gerald Asher is an English wine writer and former wine merchant who has been based in California since 1974. He began importing fine wines to London as early as 1955, via his company Asher, Storey and Co. In 1971 he went to New York to import Bordeaux wines for Austin, Nichols and Co. He was wine editor of Gourmet magazine for 30 years, writing the popular Wine Journal monthly column. France’s government awarded him the Order of Agricultural Merit for contribution to French agriculture in 1974. The same year he became head of Monterey Wine Company in San Francisco, where he fell in love with Californian wine.
