1972 vintage guide for Red Australia

drink now

Dry, relatively cool season in which later harvesting Coonawarra and Eden Valley fared best

Weather Conditions

After a wet January and damp February, the 1972 season dried out, without ever becoming excessively warm. The cooler regions, which harvest later, were best able to exploit the timing of the drier periods and bring in riper fruit in good conditions. It was however another wet and difficult season in the Hunter Valley.

Best Appellations

Some top wines came from Coonawarra and Eden Valley as well as the mid-Victoria region of Gouldburn Valley.

Best Producers

Some first-rate Henschke wines came from both the Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Seppelt produced an excellent sparkling wine from Great Western material (Victoria) under its Show Sparkling Shiraz label. Chateau Tahbilk releases a deliciously smooth and chocolate-like Reserve Bin 58 Shiraz.
