The budding was late and the flowering was spoiled by rain which continued through August, so that the ripening of the grapes did not start until September. This meant that the Riesling vintage could only start in November.
Best Appellations
Nevertheless, in the classic regions, charming light wines were made, in complete contrast with those of the heavier 1976 vintage.
Best Producers
Even simple QbAs from top vineyards, for example the Staatsweingut’s Steinberg in the Rheingau, lasted well into their ‘teens. In the Pfalz Pfeffingen made incredible long-living Rieslings and Scheurebes. Most wines of this vintage however are long past their best.
