Domaine de la Cadenette, Costières de Nîmes 2015
Costières de Nîmes is the black sheep of the Rhône family. It originally belonged to the region of Languedoc-Roussillon, becoming a Rhône appellation in 2004 when it was successfully argued that the wines were closer in style to the latter. It occupies the south-western corner of the Rhône, bordered by Langeudoc-Roussillon to the west and Provence to the east. It lacks the prestige of the villages of the Côtes du Rhône, and so the wines can be picked up for very reasonable prices.
This wine is from a recently converted organic winery and made from a blend of Syrah and Grenache. It has an aromatic nose of cranberry and plum with some spice. Savoury liquorice and spicy plum on the palate are kept in check by a fresh, cranberry-laced acidity. Try with antipasti.
