Go beyond the oak and you’ll see how delicious and pure the fruit is in this single-vineyard wine from Doña Paula. Acidity dominates, enhancing the flavours of cherry, violets and mineral. One is for the cellar.
Behind a curtain of ripeness, there is a firm streak of acidity moderating all the sweet flavours and, more importantly, enhancing the freshness in this dense yet radiant Malbec from vines planted at 1,200 metres above sea level in El Manzano, one of the highest areas in Vista Flores.
Take a moment and see how pure this Malbec feels. It is tense and filled with red fruit, but at the same time with lots of energy and vibrancy coming from those chalky soils of Gualtallary.
Mendoza - Argentina's Malbec, this wine hasDense and voluptuous – generous in black fruit and sweet spices, but with bright acidity behind the lush flavours. Available at Majestic
From one of the highest sites in Agrelo, this is a polished expression of Malbec. Rich in cherry and violet aromas, its structure feels tight, firm and ready for a steak. With still some years ahead, you might want to save a case.
Aged in cement tanks and old barrels for a year, this comes from vines planted on the chalky soils of Altamira. Its tannins are tight and tense and the flavours rich in mineral tones and sweetly spiced red fruits. A true expression of the place, it will gain in charm and complexity.
As usual with Casarena, this is a refined, elegant interpretation of Agrelo’s Malbec. It has that sweet ripeness so classical of the place, but in this case moderated by a crunchy acidity and electric tannins. It feels so juicy and tender that is hard not to pour a second glass. A beautiful, precise vision of Malbec.
Philippe Vincens took over this property in 2008. The family bought its first vineyard in 1919 and sold grapes to the coop until 1982 when it decided to vinify and bottle its own wines. Vincens makes his wines from vineyards on the plateau, where he encourages biodiversity and green-harvests to maintain low yields. The average age of the vines is 30 years. Vincens produces several cuvées, but Origine, which contains 10% Merlot, is one of the most basic and is machine-harvested. Aged in older barriques, it demonstrates that great Cahors doesn’t require lashings of new oak.
This property was bought by software tycoon Philippe Lejeune in 2007...
In 2001 Sébastien Dauliac left his job in Toulouse to return to the family property and focus on raising the quality of the vines. He owns 14 hectares, including 12ha on mostly sidérolithique soils, from which he makes several cuvées, all pure Malbec. All his wines are fermented with natural yeasts. Mythique is from 70-year-old vines cropped at 40 hl/ha and receives long ageing in new oak. Dauliac’s most unusual wine is Sismique, aged in new oak barrels toasted by lowering hot ceramics into the interior, heating but not burning the staves; it is only released in magnums.
Youthful, black fruit aromas with notes of tobacco and seasoned leather. Big, deep, rich, round and velvety with dark fruit flavours and savoury earthy notes. Tremendous power. Still climbing. Another 20 years of life ahead.
Fresh aromas of juicy ripe fruit with hints of mint and sage. Fresh, ripe and sweet palate with plum and black cherry flavours. Approachable now, yet to reach its peak and will keep.
Lovely fragrance – sweetly aromatic, even floral, with notes of coffee, spice and mint. Soft and plush in style with sweet, juicy fruit and fine balance. Gentle, tapering finish. This is the essence of La Morra!
