Sweet Fortified over £10

And the winner is...

Henriques & Henriques, 15 Year Old Verdelho,
Madeira, Portugal NV (20%)

Beautifully expressed nutty and orange peel aromas
with terrific vigour and firmness of fruit. Real energy
here. Complex notes of tobacco, and a very fine
length. Splendid!
UK: £19.99/500ml; Wai

Despite a concerted effort from Portugal’s Douro Valley, victory in this category goes to the same country’s volcanic, Atlantic island. There are only two names in Madeira…’ So the saying goes and, from Henriques & Henriques’ outstanding showing over the years in the Decanter World Wine Awards, this has a ring of truth. It is unique among Madeira shippers in that it owns its vineyards: 10 hectares – huge by Madeira standards – at Quinta Grande, 600m above the fishing community of Câmara de Lobos.
