Decanter’s recommendation of the week
M Chapoutier, Domaine des Granges de Mirabel, Viognier, Ardèche, France 2005
100% Viognier from one of France’s most consistent ‘brands’. The variety certainly shows its colours on the nose but not in an excessive manner; instead there are subtle aromas of apricot tart with a touch of honey. In the mouth it’s a blend of stonefruit and mineral notes with a clean, rounded finish.

Marks & Spencer, Château Panchille, ‘Cuvée Alix’, 2003
Château Panchille is a compact yet well regarded CRUS Bourgeois Superior property on Bordeaux’s right bank. This bottling for M&S is classic Bordeaux through-and through with dark, truffle and cedar aspects on the nose. The theme continues in the mouth with good depth of fruit and grippy tannins.

Fonseca, Guimaraens 1988, Douro
This is Fonseca’s second label port, produced in years when they do not declare a vintage – therefore not producing a fully-fledged vintage Port. This shows a nice combination of development and primary fruit, and although not being the most complex Port around is still a satisfying drop.
