A good year for Pomerol, continuing the favourable run of 2005, 2006 and 2007, though quality is more uniform in 2008 and a notch higher than the two previous years. The characteristics of the vintage are deep colours, fragrance, fresh acidity, natural alcohol levels of 13-14° and the opulence that typifies quality Pomerol. Naturally lower yields (due to mildew and coulure) helped ensure consistency and terroir has played a part with wines from the warmer clay/gravels of the plateau (usually the site of the top estates) superior to those on sandier soils. The wines are ripe and concentrated with textural and aromatic charm. James Lawther MW.
