The greater variety of soils in Lalande-de-Pomerol (sand, gravel, clay) meant a mixed offering from the region. Those with sandy soils had more difficulty with the dry conditions, the maturity and quality of tannins and fruit more suspect. The vine suffered less in soils with a percentage of clay and here some excellent wines have been made. Alcohol degrees are high but there's an abundance of fruit, good acidity and firm, ripe tannins. By James Lawther MW
