Decanter raises £15,000 for charity

In one afternoon Decanter has raised nearly £15,000 at Christie’s for the charity WaterAid.

The first part of Decanter’s Wine into Water auctions was held at the London auction house’s South Kensington showrooms

All 59 lots entered into the auction were sold, with lots varying in size from 12 to 36 bottles. The final lot – a unique mixed pallet of 40 cases (480 bottles) of wines from across the world – along with an invitation to a special Decanter and Christie’s charity lunch was sold for £2,900.

All the wines auctioned were the remaining bottles from the Decanter World Wine Awards competition held earlier this year. All the bottles were in the over £10 category.

In total £14,705 was raised in the auction. The money will go directly to WaterAid, a charity which aims to provide safe domestic water to for the world’s poorest people.

WaterAid says that £15 will give one person access to a lasting supply of clean water, sanitation and hygiene education. The money raised so far has therefore benefitted 980 people.

‘I think this is an amazing achievement,’ said Duncan Wilbur of WaterAid.

Decanter’s Clare Seel said, ‘we’re absolutely delighted we raised this amount of money and we’re hoping Saturday’s auction will prove just as successful.’

Decanter and Christie’s will be holding part two of the Decanter World Wine Awards auction at 5pm on Saturday 20 November, at the end of the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter at London’s Landmark Hotel.

It is not necessary to purchase a ticket to the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter in order to attend the auction.
