Constellation is axing 40 jobs in Australia as part of plans to bottle more of its wine in the UK.
The workers at the company’s Reynella wine packaging plant in Southern Australia have taken voluntary redundancy as a result of the changes, the company said.
Constellation is also creating 20 jobs at its UK bottling facility at Constellation Park in Avonmouth, near Bristol.
The move will improve its response times to customers in the UK and mainland Europe, the company said.
‘This expanded in-market bottling programme will improve our service and response times for UK and European customers, in addition to lessening the impact of fluctuating currencies and reducing our environmental footprint,’ a Constellation spokesperson told decanter.com.
The company opened Constellation Park last year, establishing what it described as Europe’s biggest bottling and distribution centre at a cost of €50m.
This latest move continues a growing trend of large wine companies transporting wines in bulk and bottling at destination.
