Profits from two Burgundy wine auctions will be donated to the Japanese Red Cross to help victims of the 2011 tsunami.
More than 50 lots of Burgundy wines will be go under the hammer in Paris on 21 September including Mazis-Chambertin 1997, Chambertin Grand Cru 1947, and Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 1989.
The following day Christie’s Paris will auction another 56 lots in aid of Japan, including Romanée-Conti 1971, Clos de la Roche 1978, and Bonnes-Mares 1973.
The Burgundy Wine Council (BIVB) claimed there were ‘strong links’ uniting Burgundians and Japanese. ‘This is why domains, wine houses and wine co-operatives are called upon to donate wines,’ it said.
Anthony Hanson MW, senior wine department consultant for Christie’s, added, ‘We are very attached to Japan and the Japanese because they are great wine-lovers’.
