A selection of vintage prewar wines that were successfully hidden from the occupying German forces in Guernsey during the second world war were finally sold for £50,000 in London yesterday.
The wines, which had been kept hidden by Channel Islands’ wine and spirit merchant Bucktrout & Co in a secret chamber during the German occupation, were sold by UK auctioneer Bonhams.
The selection of hidden wartime wines included 1920s bottles of Latour, Margaux, Mouton Rothschild and Ausone, as well as Chateaux Haut-Brion and Cheval-Blanc from the 1940s and assorted bottles of port from the turn of the 19th century.
