Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, Zind, Vin de France, Alsace, 2014

This unusual Alsace blend of two-thirds Chardonnay and one-third Auxerrois – hence the Vin de France labelling rather than AC Alsace – is very citrussy with lots of white stone. Nice texture and weight marked by fresh, saline acidity.

This blend of Chardonnay and Auxerrois grapes grown in the famed Clos Windsbuhl vineyard sits outside of appellation regulations, which doesn't allow Chardonnay in still AOC Alsace wines. It is thus labelled as lowly Vin de France, but don't let that fool you! The oaky, spicy nose is reminiscent of a Puligny-Montrachet, with quite a pronounced mineral character that follows through onto the palate. Juicy tangerine pith and citrus juice flavours provide succulence, and the oak sits much more subtly on the palate than on the nose. This wine has good length to the finish, and is very enjoyable.
