But well-made cru Beaujolais can provide immense drinking pleasure, as this 2020-vintage Fleurie demonstrates. Château de Pougelon's fifth-generation winemaker Marine Descombe specialises in low-intervention winemaking and farms sustainably. This wine, new to Majestic, spent 13 months in concrete tanks before bottling, and is drinking beautifully now – soft and sappy with a purity of blackberry and forest fruits, and a lick of brown sugar fruit sweetness.
