One in every 12 bottles of Champagne sold in the UK in 2015 was from Aldi, according to the supermarket – an incredible statistic, but more understandable when you taste the quality and look at the price of this Champagne. Made by Philizot et Fils in the Marne Valley, it shows lovely baked apple, brioche and peach flavours, with decent acidity and creamy weight thanks to extended ageing before release. Nothing complex, but well made and an excellent mid-week toasting wine.

Often seen below £10 (keep a look out just before Christmas), this is always one of the best-value supermarket Champagnes, offering appealing apple crumble characters of ripe Granny Smiths, spiced biscuits, nuts and fresh yeastiness. Firm and bright with a soft mousse.
