Tardieu-Laurent, Vieilles Vignes, Cornas, Rhône, 2011

Once known for its rustic interpretations of Syrah on the granitic slopes of the northern Rhône valley, abutting the vineyards of St-Péray, Cornas these days is all about ripeness, purity and complexity, much like Hermitage to the north. This example from négociants Tardieu-Laurent has a lovely nose of crushed black fruit with mineral and iron notes. Full and concentrated, the palate has tannic grip but also fluidity thanks to the juiciness of the fruit. Powerful cassis and iron flavours are accompanied by black pepper that lingers on the long finish. Still youthful, with plenty of potential.
