It's one of France's most popular red wine styles, a robust red blend from the southern Rhône that is perfect matched with grilled red meats and other rustic meat dishes. Julie Rouffignac is a talented winemaker, whose family vineyard produces the excellent Domaine d'Arbousset Tavel rosé, also available at Tesco. (Plus a very good Lirac, under the same domaine name.) The fruit for this Châteauneuf is drawn directly from various producers in the appellation, and from different vintages. It has been blended skilfully, producing an open and expressive wine, very approachable, with firm, dark blackberry and forest fruit flavours, hints of savoury sausage meat, plus a twist of white pepper and a spicy length.
