Waitrose, Loved and Found Elbling, Mosel, Germany, 2019

Well done Waitrose for its Waitrose & Partners range of lesser-known varieties from around the world – perfect for the adventurous high street shopper. The front label of this Mosel white describes the wine inside as 'zingy and aromatic, vibrant sherbet, lime and floral'. If that sounds like Riesling, it's probably because this ancient German variety has family links to the more famous grape. You'd be hard pushed to tell them apart in a blind tasting, on the basis of this. Bottled under screwcap and completely dry, it's got super-zingy lime citrus aromas, good acidity, lovely purity and zestiness. It feels like having a morning shower with citrus body wash - guaranteed to wake you up! And very good value, if slightly one-dimensional.
