Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva is often overlooked but can offer great quality for not a lot of money, and Mo' Riserva from Cantina Tollo is one of my top picks. A balsamic, chocolatey nose is followed in the mouth by grippy chalky tannins supporting fleshy red fruits and dark chocolate with flecks of earth, tobacco and spice. Fresh acidity cuts through the richness and gives a persistent finish.
