Michele Chiarlo, La Court Riserva, Nizza, Piedmont, 2018

From a three-hectare plot planted in 1976, this is a truly delicious Nizza Riserva. Matured in a combination of casks and large barrels for 12 months, followed by a further 18 months in bottle, it's full of earthy scents with spicy cedar and dark hedgerow berries. It's really fresh in the mouth, with a balsamic quality allied to mineral acidity. Juicy, integrated black fruits mingle with tobacco, followed by black pepper and raspberry coulis on the finish.
