Made in northeastern Italy's Veneto region, Amarone della Valpolicella is an intensely flavoured dry red wine made from grapes that have been left to dry naturally before being vinified. Very high in alcohol, this is dark, brooding and fairly concentrated, with a toasty oak frame and some attractive bitter cherry fruit. I'd like to see a bit more stuffing here – a greater weight of fruit – but it's a good wine to pair with a mature hard cheese or rustic meat dishes.
